Personal Development

Personal development supports children to acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. As part of a whole school approach, PD is used to develop the qualities and attributes children need to thrive as individuals, family members, members of the school community and of wider society. The key features of PD are Relationships and sex education, and Physical Health and mental wellbeing. These are the statutory requirements of a PD provision, which are taught through the PSHE curriculum. The wider, non-statutory features, include equality of opportunities, British values, Citizenship, development of character, wider opportunities (interests, enrichment activities and work experience), CIEAG (Careers information, education, advice and guidance) and SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural).

School Values: Heard, Empowered, Achieving, Respected, Trusted and Safe

The school values underpin our ethos and whole school outlook at Heart of the Forest. The school values are taught throughout the day and are recognised through celebration assemblies and Reflection Time (15 minute timetabled lesson delivered at the end of each day). Each pathway delivers reflection time in a way that is accessible to its learners. Pathway 1 and 2 use lots of photos and videos of pupils’ achievements as a means of reflecting on their achievements, which includes their personal development. In Pathway 3 pupils use Passports as a focus to record and discussion pupils’ progress and development.

PSHE

Central to pupils’ personal development is the PSHE curriculum.

Personal Development Programme

The Personal Development programme has been designed to provide pupils at each age phase and Pathway with a series of enrichment activities. These are delivered as part of a timetabled programme (click on link for programme). These activities enable pupils to develop important life skills while developing further interests beyond learning as part of the curriculum. Life skills include turn taking, sharing, independence, resilience, accepting changes, communication, etc.
